Tintilla de Rota
Tintilla de Rota is one of Spain’s most endangered grape varieties and one of its most extraordinary. For centuries it thrived in the chalky, windswept soils around the town of Rota on the Atlantic coast of Cádiz, producing deep, inky wines prized by the Spanish royal court. By the late 20th century, it had nearly vanished entirely, displaced by more commercially convenient varieties and forgotten by all but a handful of dedicated growers.
A Grape Pulled Back from the Brink
At its lowest point, fewer than 10 hectares of Tintilla de Rota remained in existence. It was the passion of a small group of Cádiz producers, including Huerta de Albala, that saved it. Through painstaking vineyard recovery, old-vine preservation, and a commitment to single-varietal bottlings, they restored Tintilla de Rota to the world’s attention. Today it is recognised as one of Andalucía’s most distinctive indigenous varieties, with a character unlike anything else grown in Spain.
What Makes It Unique
Tintilla de Rota produces wines of remarkable depth and personality. Expect intense dark fruit, blackberry, black cherry, and fig layered with liquorice, dried herbs, and a distinctive saline minerality that speaks directly of its Atlantic coastal origins. The tannins are firm but refined, and the finish is long and persistent. It is a wine that rewards patience and rewards attention.
The variety’s natural home is the albariza soils of Cádiz, the same brilliant white chalky limestone that gives Sherry its character. The Atlantic influence moderates temperatures and brings a freshness that prevents the wines from becoming heavy, despite their concentration.
